Only two of the Scottish Cup last 16 ties will have VAR in operation this weekend – despite four of them being played at Premiership grounds.
The technology is only available at top flight stadia for cup games and that was a source of controversy in the last round with Aberdeen denied an equaliser against Darvel which should have stood had VAR been in operation. The inconsistency of having it available for some cup ties and not others has sparked frustration with Celtic, Rangers, Dundee United and Livingston the only home teams in this round with the capacity for it.
But the Scottish Daily Express report only Celtic vs St Mirren on Saturday and Rangers vs Partick Thistle on Sunday will have it running. The technology is believed to cost teams up to £10,000 per tie to have VAR in operation in the cup and Dundee United vs Kilmarnock and Livingston vs Inverness, both Saturday 3pm kick-offs, will go ahead without it.
Celtic host St Mirren in the evening kick-off on Saturday while Rangers host Thistle in Sunday's all-Glasgow clash at 4pm. The round of 16 kicks off on Friday when Hamilton host Hearts and concludes on Monday when Darvel, slayers of Aberdeen, look for another cup shock against League One Falkirk.
