Celtic and Rangers earn Champions League bonuses but poor performances sees cash down the drain

Celtic and Rangers have not been able to fully maximise the potential financial rewards on offer to them in the Champions League.

The Glasgow sides returned to the top tier of European football this season but it has ended in a nightmare, taking two points between them over 10 games, both earned by Ange Postecoglou's Hoops. Clubs in group stage earn cash rewards depending on how much they earn, with £2.4m for a win and £807k for a draw.

That shows clearly it has not been great for either side, although Celtic have at least took home seven figures from their 1-1 matches against Shakhtar Donetsk. Rangers meanwhile haven't got anything from their Group A campaign as pressure mounts on manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and they are looking to become the competition's worst-ever team at this stage in the tournament after heavy losses against Ajax, Liverpool and Napoli.

Postecoglou's men have won plaudits for their attack-minded approach in Group F but they were put to the sword by RB Leipzig and Real Madrid.

Van Bronckhorst's meanwhile have been lamented, for if they haven't imploded, the displays have been largely passive.

Los Blancos await the Hoops on their final matchday and Rangers will host Ajax at Ibrox before both potentially bow out of Europe bottom of their groups.
