Celtic and Rangers Champions League runs compared as Hoops marked as competitors while rivals flop

Celtic have shown that they can mix it with some of the best in Europe - but Rangers have been off the pace required on two occasions.

Former striker of both clubs Kenny Miller reckons each side has the ability to wrestle with the big guns across the continent in their respective Champions League groups, but believes it's Celtic who have brought that to fruition so far. Two home Group F wins for them against RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk could see them through on seven points if Real Madrid win their games against those sides, but it's a different story for the Ibrox club.

They've lost to Ajax, Napoli and Liverpool by an aggregate score of 9-0 and need to overturn a three-point deficit to even claim third in Group A, never mind qualify for the last 16, Liverpool currently sat second on six points. Miller, speaking on Go Radio, knows both have the potential but Rangers need to start showing it.

He said: "On Celtic's part, they definitely have competed, more than that. When you get those moments like against Real Madrid when there's three or four really good opportunities to score the first goal, and you don't take them, it will come back to haunt you.

"Rangers maybe had a couple of moments against Napoli they never took. In the games against Ajax and Liverpool, they haven't really been at the races. It's been a no-contest both games really but Celtic have more than competed.

"Would you want to qualify, would you want second or third, players aren't going to think like that and there's no way a manager is going to think like that.

"You can build a big reputation by performing at this level and I think both clubs are capable when playing at the top of their game. Unfortunately for Rangers they haven't hit the high levels of their performance in the games against Ajax and Liverpool."
