Celtic and Rangers 'B' teams enthusiastically 'welcomed back' to Lowland League by EK boss

East Kilbride boss Chris Aitken has welcomed the idea of Rangers and Celtic 'B' teams' continued inclusion in the Lowland League, saying it has been a breath of fresh air, and provided teams and players with a new lease of life.

The Glasgow giants' involvement in the fifth tier of Scottish football was only supposed to be for this season, but reports suggest that a formal presentation has been made for Celtic and Rangers to be included again next season.

Member clubs are set to vote on the proposal at a general meeting on March 21.

Bonnyrigg Rose have already been crowned champions for this season, with Celtic sitting second, and Rangers fourth. The idea has always been that they cannot earn promotion or be relegated.

Kilby boss Aitken says the clubs' inclusion has been great for the league and provides exposure that teams and players otherwise just don't get at that level.

He said: "If that's the case, I've always been one that was for it. I think they've come into the league and it has been great.

"When the games have come around the guys have had a wee bit of press, and when they're going into the games there has been a wee bit of a crowd there and a wee bit of atmosphere.

"I've loved it. I would be all for it again, absolutely.

"When your guys, players and management are playing against Rangers and Celtic there's a wee bit of an edge to it, when they see that strip on and that badge.

"When you walk out you see the crowd and what they bring. The Rangers and Celtic games at our bit, in our experience, behind the goal was always full. We hadn't had anything like that since I've been there.

"As a player and a management that's what you want. You want to go into these games trying to prove yourself against the so-called 'best of the best'.

"I've always said I liked the idea. I think Rangers and Celtic teams being in a league like this should be happening, and maybe even in a league above.

"Every other country does it, so why not us?

"They ticked all the boxes for me, and if it happened again I'd definitely be all for it."

Aitken says having both Glasgow giants in the league has been brilliant, and something a bit different.

He said: "It's good when you come up against these teams. You get a wee bit of press, there's a wee bit extra zip in training, because you're coming up against them. Regarding Rangers and Celtic, 90 per cent of the dressing room is probably one side of the Old Firm.

"So when those games are coming up you can see there's a wee bite to it, because they want to prove they're just as good as some of these boys.

"They want to go and test themselves against the best, and if any player tells you otherwise they're lying.

"I knew there would have been a wee bit of talk about it happening, because I think they've brought a lot of good to it.

"It has been a bit of a breath of fresh air. I've been fortunate to have been in the game - especially at part-time level - for the last 20 years and up until last year there has never been a change.

"Sometimes a change just relights the fire, gets it going again, and it has given everybody a new lease of life.

"It's two new teams in, and you go and play them, and everything about it brings it up a wee notch."
