Celebrity names you've probably been pronouncing wrong

In a recent TikTok video, model Emily Ratajkowski revealed we've all been pronouncing her name wrong this whole time. The 31-year-old said the correct way to pronounce her surname is the Polish way.

That means fans should in fact be saying it like Rah-tah-kov-skee. And it seems she might not be the only celebrity giving fans some trouble with a tricky surname.

In light of this news, the team at Preply have done some digging and compiled a list of the celebrity names that you have been mispronouncing all this time. It’s time to set the record straight…

Lindsay Lohan - Lo-wen

It would seem the correct way is to say "Lindsay Lo-Wen". In her TikTok debut, Lindsay Lohan got fans questioning everything when she revealed that people have been pronouncing her surname wrong.

Introducing herself on the platform, Lindsay corrected fans by saying her last name is actually pronounced ‘Lo-wen’ instead of ‘Lo-han’. Fans were quick to react, commenting “Wait. Lindsay “LOWEN”?!?! I’ve been saying it wrong my whole life?!?”

Jake Gyllenhall - Jake Yen-lee-hey-lo

A celebrity name that needs to be put to justice. It seems that the universal pronunciation for Jake’s last name is ‘Jill-en-hall’ - but the world is wrong.

Speaking to TV host Conan O’Brien, the 41-year-old actor revealed that his Swedish last name should be pronounced ‘Yen-lee-hey-lo’ - what a tongue-twister.

Zendaya - Zen-Day-Yuh

Zendaya is certainly doing well for herself - which makes it all the more important for people to pronounce the star’s name correctly. In a YouTube video, the Euphoria actress expressed that her name is commonly mispronounced as ‘Zen-dye-uh’, when the correct pronunciation is ‘Zen-day-yuh’

Timothée Chalamet - Timo-Tay Shala-May

The Call By Your Name star really wants fans to call him by his actual name. Speaking in an interview with Frank Ocean, the 26-year-old heartthrob revealed that the real pronunciation of his name is ‘Timo-tay Shala-may’. He however said: “I can’t ask people to call me that; it just seems really pretentious".

Amanda Seyfried - Amanda Sigh-Frid

Mamma Mia! The world has been saying Amanda Seyfried’s name wrong all this time. In an interview with Hollywood Streams, the 36-year-old actress said the worst pronunciation of her last name would be ‘Say-fried’ or ‘Sig-freed’, rather the correct pronunciation is actually ‘Sigh-frid.”

Ariana Grande - Ariana Gran-dee

Ariana Grande (Film Magic)

Say what?! Contrary to how the star’s name is pronounced in the media, Ari shocked fans by revealing the actual pronunciation of her last name is ‘Grand-dee’, not ‘Gradhn-day’. Talking to Beats 1’s Ebro Darden, the star said she pronounced her last name as ‘gran-dee’ when she was growing up. As well as this, she said the pronunciation has always been ‘gran-dee’ in the Grande family.

Charlize Theron - Charlize There-in

It appears that the ‘o’ is very misleading in Charlize Theron’s name. During a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Atomic Blonde star revealed that her surname is actually pronounced ‘There-in’. Safe to say we didn’t see that one coming.

Chrissy Teigen - Chrissy Tie-Ghen

Star Chrissy Teigen said that her Norwegian last name is actually pronounced ‘Tie-ghen’ rather than ‘Tee-ghen’. She said that even though she always introduces herself as ‘Tee-ghen’, the proper pronunciation is ‘Tie-ghen’, as this is how she was taught how to pronounce her name as she was growing up.
