A celebrated Filipino chef and restaurateur has passed away at 65 after being found unresponsive in her Hong Kong hotel room, her family confirmed in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
Trailblazing celebrity chef Margarita Forés, known for championing Filipino cuisine and bringing authentic Italian flavors to the Philippines, was discovered unresponsive after missing a lunch meeting, according to Manila Standard.
Her cause of death has not yet been determined.

Forés, named Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2016, was a two-time cancer survivor, having beaten thyroid cancer in 2006.
Her son Amado also confirmed her passing on Instagram, writing: “Dear Friends and Family, It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Forés.
“Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more in due time.”
Her illustrious culinary career spanned over three decades, beginning with her time in New York, where she first fell in love with Italian cooking.
She later traveled to Italy to immerse herself in the cuisine before returning home to establish herself as one of the Philippines’ most respected chefs.
In 1997, she launched Cibo, a popular Italian restaurant chain offering affordable comfort food at more than 20 locations across the country.
The success of Cibo led to the opening of other dining spots, including Lusso, Grace Park, and Loggia—restaurants that either fused Filipino and Italian influences or focused on elevated farm-to-table dining. Beyond restaurants, Forés also ran a catering business, a floral shop, and a culinary school.
Her culinary achievements earned her widespread recognition, and just last week, she appeared on the cover of Tatler Asia alongside her son, celebrated as “talented culinary artisans.”
Following news of her passing, tributes poured in across social media, with many expressing admiration for her contributions to the culinary world.
Just last month, Forés was seen giving Gordon Ramsay a tour of her local Farmers Market in Araneta City, showcasing her passion for fresh, local ingredients.
“We honor the life and legacy of our founder and guiding light, Chef Margarita Forés,” Cibo posted on Facebook.
“Her warmth, creativity, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire us all. Thank you for sharing your heart with us, Chef Margarita. You will always be CIBO.”
