If you had told me years ago that I’d be covering beauty brands by anyone remotely famous, I’d have probably taken offence. A lot of celebrity beauty products are built on simply having a famous face and founder behind them. There is the idea that it doesn’t matter that the formulations are substandard, not on par with other decent products within those categories and widely overpriced because, “I’m famous! Of course it will sell!” And back in the day, despite the quality not being very good (I had another word in mind, but I’m trying to be polite) and the offering simply being an exercise in narcissism, the products did sell. That was when celebrities were shrouded in mystery and so the world coveted anything that was an extension of the famous face or provided some access to slivers of their life. Nowadays, thanks to social media, the veil has been lifted. So now we respond with a healthy cynicism to anything celebrity related. This has worked well for beauty lovers. The celeb brands here have, with the help of experts in the beauty field, stepped up to create relatively well-priced products that are actually very good. Because, in beauty, well-formulated products with a point of difference is what counts – not fame.
