Celebration for life of Bristol legend Maggie Telfer to be held

An event is being staged in Bristol to celebrate the life of one of the city's leading figures, whose death last month shocked many.

The event will commemorate Maggie Telfer OBE, who was the co-founder and CEO of the Bristol Drugs Project. She died at the age of 63 after a short illness, after 34 years running the groundbreaking Bristol charity.

The project and Maggie's work 'inspired and enabled the transformation of countless lives in Bristol and beyond', and the memorial service will be more like a celebration concert with the Bristol Drugs Project's own choir and orchestra performing at the event.

And the organisers of the event say that they want it to be completely inclusive to reflect Maggie's own values - so much so that anyone can join the choir for the day - just turn up on the morning of the event and join the choir's rehearsals.

The event is taking place at St George's Hall near Brandon Hill on Friday, March 10 - the date of the 37th anniversary of the Bristol Drugs Project opening, back in 1986. A spokesperson for the project said its staff and trustees are inviting everyone whose lives were touched by Maggie to come along.

"We invite you to join us in celebrating the life of the tenacious and fabulous Maggie Telfer. Maggie inspired and enabled the transformation of countless lives in Bristol and beyond through her groundbreaking work with BDP. The anniversary of BDP opening is a testimony to Maggie's courage and vision. Maggie loved colour and music and there will be both. Please come as you are - there is no dress code and all are welcome."

The event starts at 2.30pm on Friday, March 10, until around 3.45pm with coffee and cake in the cafe afterwards. Anyone who wants to join the choir for the day should join the open rehearsal from 11am at St George's that day.
