Celebrated annually on August 26, International Dog Day is a special day all over the world, a chance for dog parents everywhere to celebrate and show off their beloved companions.

The day was created by animal welfare activist and pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige and was first celebrated in 2004.

According to Paige, International Dog Day is set aside to “support all breeds and varieties of dogs”, but with special emphasis on discouraging the purchase of dogs from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills.

“Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort,” the National Dog Day website reads.
