Nov. 11 is the day of the spotted garden eel, and visitors at Sumida Aquarium on Wednesday enjoyed the view of the long, thin garden eels as they lifted their small bodies from the sand and swayed in line -- resembling the "11/11" date.
The aquarium, located in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, keeps about 300 spotted garden eels, known as "chin anago" in Japanese, and whose scientific name is Heteroconger hassi.
During the aquarium's temporary closure due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, the eels had returned to their normal behavior pattern of mostly staying hidden in their sand burrows, but once visitors started returning, they are said to have begun showing up again much more frequently.
