CEC Appointment Sparks Political Row: Congress accuses Govt of violating spirit of Constitution

New Delhi: The Congress has accused the Central Government of appointed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in a secretive manner, violating the Supreme Court's orders and the principles of the constitution. 

Gyanesh Kumar Appointed as New CEC
Following a meeting of the selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday evening, Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as India's new CEC.

'Against The Spirit of The Constitution'
Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal posted on X, stating that the government hastily issued the notification for the new CEC’s appointment at midnight, which goes against the spirit of the Constitution.

According to him, the Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasized in multiple cases that the CEC should be an impartial stakeholder to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

He further stated that the amended law removed the Chief Justice from the CEC selection committee, and the government should have waited until the Supreme Court hearing on February 19 before making the appointment.
