Police say pensioners have been duped out of cash during a series of callous distraction thefts in a Tameside town. Greater Manchester Police says a man has been approaching elderly people using cash machines in Hyde.
Victims have been told by the man that the cash machines are not working - but officers say while they were distracted, the man would withdraw money from their accounts. Today (October 25), GMP has released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incidents.
In a post on Facebook this afternoon, a spokesperson for GMP Tameside South and West said: "Can you help identify this man? We want to speak with this man in connection with a spate of distraction thefts from elderly people in Hyde.
"The victims, who have all been elderly, have been approached by a male whilst withdrawing cash from ATM machines in the Hyde area of Tameside. The male has informed the victims that the ATM machine was broken.
"Whilst the victims have been distracted, the male has withdrawn money from the victim's accounts. Officers are appealing for anyone who may recognise the male in the photograph or have any information that may assist with our enquiries."
Anyone who recognises the man in the image or has information about the incidents is urged to contact GMP online using LiveChat or call 101, quoting crime reference CRI/06GG/0019777/22.
