CCTV footage shows masked thieves stripping down County Durham school mini bus as investigation continues

This is the moment two masked thieves stripped down a mini bus which belonged to a specialist school.

Last month, two intruders broke into the UTC South Durham site in Newton Aycliffe and targeted a school mini bus before stealing a mountain bike from a shelter. The incident was branded "frustrating" by the school as the incident impacted on students who were due to sit their GCSE exams.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that inquiries into the incident are still ongoing and no arrests have been made. The school has since released CCTV footage of the theft in the hope that those responsible can be identified.

The incident came to light after site security at UTC South Durham were notified on June 18 that there had been a break-in with thieves stripping a minibus for parts as well as stealing a student’s mountain bike.

The thieves had left the mini bus un-roadworthy as the majority of the front had been removed from the vehicle and taken.

Footage shows the pair removing the front end of the van before sparks can be seen as one of the intruders removes parts. The duo then left carrying the stolen van parts.

As well as targeting the minibus, the thieves also broke a bike free from the designated student bike shelter and stole it, meaning a number of students travelling to school - some of which had a GCSE exam - were unable to access the usual school transport.

Fortunately, members of the teaching staff offered transport to the students who would have been unable to make it to school for their exam.

Anyone with information is urged to ring Durham Constabulary on the non-emergency 101 number.
