Cavern Club named among top 20 landmarks in England

Liverpool's Cavern Club has been named among the top 20 most popular landmarks in England.

The famed music venue, based on Mathew Street in the booming city centre, is a cultural and historical icon renowned for being the birthplace of the Beatles. It remains interwoven in the fabric of Britain's music scene by still hosting performances day and night.

It's an intimate spot, boasting brick vaulted cellars and 1960s memorabilia. The original site was closed in 1973 and buried in a demolition project as part of plans for a new underground railway which never came to be.

In the 80s, there were plans to excavate the cellars and re-open the Cavern Club in its original form but it wasn't possible due to structural problems and damage. Instead, thousands of bricks from the original cellar were used in the reconstruction of the Cavern Club.

It now sits at a 90 degree angle to the original, while covering around 70% of the original floorplan of the Cavern Club. The 'live lounge' is an exact replica of the original, and the main stage is very close to the original location.

Authenticity has been secured through the use of as many old bricks as possible. Paul McCartney has performed at the new version, while new bands, tribute acts and more regularly perform on a weekly basis.

Recently, travel booking website Omio revealed the top 20 most popular tourist spots in England, based outside London. The research found the Cavern Club ranked as the 20th most popular tourist destination outside the capital city.

The Lake District ranked as the most popular, with a combined social score of 399 million. This was followed by Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, the Peak District and Robin Hood's famous home, Sherwood Forest.
