Cavani, Matic, Bailly - Manchester United injury latest and potential return dates

Manchester United have received some good news on the injury front this week but will still be without three players when they take on Brighton on Tuesday.

United will once again be looking to react after a disappointing result following Saturday's stalemate with Southampton as they play their final game in hand.

A victory would see Ralf Rangnick's side move back to fourth place after West Ham failed to capitalise on their slip up and were held to a 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

The interim manager will welcome Fred back into the fold for the visit of the Seagulls after he missed the last two matches due to testing positive for Covid-19.

While the Brazilian's return is a big boost, Rangnick still doesn't have a fully fit squad at his disposal.

Here is United's current injury list and when the players could be back in action:

Edinson Cavani

Birthday boy Edinson Cavani, now 35, is once again unavailable after he missed the draw against Southampton.

The veteran striker made his return to the starting XI against Burnley, after missing the FA Cup exit to Middlesbrough after being granted extra time off in Uruguay, but has now suffered a groin injury.

What Rangnick said: "Edi, unfortunately, had to pull out after training last night. It was some groin problems. He had treatment but, in the end, he just said he’s not available."

Ahead of Tuesday's game, he added: "Edinson is still out."

Potential return date: N/A

Nemanja Matic

Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic hasn't played for United since before the winter break after sitting on the bench for two games before then suffering a shin injury.

The 33-year-old was unavailable against the Saints and continues to be sidelined for Tuesday's fixture.

What Rangnick said: "He has some problems with his shin [and] he couldn’t train for the last two training sessions and he also won’t be training today."

Ahead of facing Brighton, he added: "Edinson is still out, the same with Nema."

Potential return date: February 20.

Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly's rotten luck with injuries struck yet again last month as he returned from representing Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations with an injury.

This time it has been an ankle problem that has kept the centre-back sidelined but he did return to training on Monday. Rangnick didn't mention his condition in his pre-match press conference so it is not yet clear if he is fit enough to return to action.

What Rangnick said: "Eric came back yesterday. He has some problems, a swollen ankle, and will therefore not be a part of the squad tomorrow."

Potential return date: N/A
