Authorities believe they know what happened to a family of four who were found dead at their New Hampshire lake house on Christmas day.

Matthew Goldstein, 52, and Lyla Goldstein, 54, and their two daughters, Valerie, 22, and Violet, 19, were found dead at the home, the Associated Press reported. The Massachusetts family was visiting New Hampshire for the holidays.

Police believe the family died as a result of a carbon monoxide leak. The home was heated with a propane gas system. The New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner found Matthew Goldstein's cause of death to be carbon monoxide poisoning. The remaining autopsies are pending, the Associated Press reported.

Police are continuing to inspect the home's propane gas heating system to determine exactly what happened, according to the Associated Press.

Matthew Goldstein was a teacher, while Lyla worked as a project manager for Microsoft.

"We are deeply heartbroken to learn of the passing of Mr. Matt Goldstein, an exceptional educator and a beloved member of our PSB and Baker School Community. Mr. Goldstein's dedication to inspiring students and shaping young minds has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him," Brookline Public Schools Superintendent Linus Guillory shared in a statement quoted by PEOPLE.
