Cats' eyes on Stewart, Smith ahead of Lions blockbuster

Geelong believe Tom Stewart's injury setback is only "minor" as they sweat on further assessment of the star defender's right knee.

Stewart was substituted out of the Cats' 15.8 (98) to 13.13 (91) defeat to St Kilda on Saturday night after jamming the knee in the hard Marvel Stadium turf.

He watched from the sidelines as Geelong fought back from a 41-point deficit and kicked seven of the last nine goals, only to fall just short.

The result left the Cats with a 1-1 record ahead of a blockbuster clash with reigning premiers Brisbane in round three.

It remains to be seen if Stewart will be cleared to play, but coach Chris Scott doesn't fear the five-time All-Australian will be out of action for too long.

"The first impression is that it's minor," Scott said when quizzed on Stewart's injury.

Bailey Smith is also a chance to feature against Brisbane after he was a late withdrawal from the St Kilda clash with a calf injury.

Scott said his boom midfield recruit was "very close" to playing against the Saints.

"If they're a chance to play we tend to give them as long as possible and then tend to be conservative unless they're absolutely right," Scott said.

"The conservative nature of the decision-making suggests to me that he'll be right next week."

Smith's latest injury setback came the week after his scintillating Geelong debut, when he tore Fremantle apart in a 78-point win in round one.

The 23-year-old star had also shone in pre-season and dominated against the Dockers with 32 disposals and one goal.

Smith missed the entire 2024 season with the Western Bulldogs because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, before being granted his wish of a trade to Geelong.
