Cat survives venomous snake attack with quick thinking and kitchen gadgets

Mabel poses with kids

In a heart-stopping incident that unfolded in Brisbane, Australia, a quick-thinking pet parent saved her beloved cat from a potentially lethal encounter with a venomous snake. Rebecca Daynes took to Facebook to share the incredible story of how she found her cat, Mabel, with an eastern brown snake wrapped tightly around her neck on January 30.

The eastern brown snake is a highly venomous reptile commonly found in eastern Australia, even in populated areas. Known for causing more snake bite deaths in Australia than any other snake species, these snakes pose a significant threat to humans and animals alike, making the situation all the more alarming.

Reacting swiftly, Daynes unraveled the snake from Mabel's neck, using nothing but a pair of kitchen tongs. Miraculously, it appears that Mabel was not bitten by the venomous snake during the terrifying ordeal. Daynes expressed her relief on Facebook, stating that after 24 hours, there were no signs of distress or symptoms from Mabel.

Although the snake was injured during the encounter, it managed to survive and has not been located since, presumably lurking in the garden or the nearby bushland behind Daynes' house. It was reported that Mabel, who suffers from a brain tumor affecting her mobility, had been kept indoors to ensure her safety. Despite these efforts, the determined feline occasionally found a way to slip outside, leading to this life-threatening encounter with the eastern brown snake.

While Mabel's lucky escape from the venomous serpent was undoubtedly a cause for celebration, Daynes mentioned in her Facebook post that the curious cat had already attempted to venture outside again, seemingly oblivious to the danger she just narrowly escaped.

Daynes initially mistook the snake for a non-venomous species, assuming it was a small python. Desperate to save her cherished companion, she swiftly grabbed a pair of tongs from the kitchen and sprang into action. Following the incident, Daynes reached out to her son and a snake identification group to confirm the snake's species, only to discover that it was indeed an eastern brown snake. Filled with anxiety, she feared that Mabel's life might be in jeopardy. However, despite the potential delay in symptoms and the unpredictable reactions of cats to snake bites, Mabel remained unscathed.

Daynes spoke with Newsweek, explaining that they took turns monitoring Mabel for any signs of distress during the first 24 hours after the incident. As over 48 hours had passed without any adverse effects, she was relieved and grateful that her resilient feline had seemingly emerged from this dangerous encounter unharmed.

It is clear that Mabel's courageous escape from the clutches of the eastern brown snake has brought her perilously close to using up all her nine lives, particularly in light of her ongoing battle with a brain tumor. Although her remaining time may be limited to just a few months, Daynes expressed immense gratitude for the extra time they will have with their beloved furry friend.

The heart-pounding tale serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that exist, even in our own backyards. It underscores the importance of remaining vigilant with our pets and taking necessary precautions to keep them safe from wildlife encounters. Daynes' quick thinking and bravery undoubtedly saved Mabel's life, leaving us in awe of the bond between humans and their animal companions.

In the end, we can find solace in the fact that Mabel's story is one of survival against all odds.
