Casualty rushed to hospital after smash on busy main road near city centre

A main road into Manchester city centre was blocked on Thursday evening after a crash, which saw one person rushed to hospital. The incident, which happened on Hyde Road, is thought to have involved a taxi and a large pick-up truck at around 9.30pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash and cordoned off the road beneath the railway bridge. One casualty was taken to hospital by paramedics after the incident, but the nature of their condition has not been confirmed.

Ambulances were at the scene, as well as officers from Greater Manchester Police as enquiries were carried out. Dramatic pictures of the scene show the large blue pick-up vehicle, which saw its bonnet visibly crushed in the incident.

It was just earlier this month that the M.E.N reported that residents living on Hyde Road (A57), which connects Gorton to the city centre, openly spoke of their fears that it was "too dangerous" to let children play near after a stream of serious accidents.

Speaking previously, local councillor Julie Reid told the Manchester Evening News : "I think it's a massive problem. Not just on Hyde Road but on all the other arterial roads heading into Manchester. Where drivers come off a motorway they get used to the speed and just don't slow down.

"I have definitely seen more reckless driving. You can put in all the measures in the world but we need drivers to help us and drive properly and according to the road and conditions." Despite this, it is not clear how this particular incident happened.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) announced the road closure, which blocked off the busy route between Bennet Street and Redgate Lane in both directions after the incident. Fire crews also attended and helped the casualty before they were taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 9.30pm this evening (28 July) firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Hyde Road, Manchester.

“Fire crews from Gorton fire station arrived quickly at the scene and assisted one casualty who was then conveyed to hospital by our colleagues at North West Ambulance Service. Crews helped to make the scene safe before leaving after being in attendance for around 40 minutes.”
