Castle gun salute to celebrate 800 years of Dumbarton as a Royal Burgh

Residents are being invited to a Royal Gun Salute at Dumbarton Castle tomorrow (June 8) to mark 800 years of the town being a Royal Burgh.

The salute will draw to a close the year-long celebrations for Dumbarton’s 800th year since the signing of the Royal Charter.

The foundation charter for the Royal Burgh of Dumbarton was sealed by Alexander II on July 8, 1222.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and are asked to arrive at the Castle at 1.30 pm, with the gun salute scheduled for 2pm at Pier Park to the front of the Castle.

Provost Douglas McAllister, said “This is an historic occasion for Dumbarton and I’d like to encourage everyone to come along to Dumbarton Castle on Saturday to witness this special event. Dumbarton was the ancient capital of Kingdom of Strathclyde whose literal translation is “fort of the Britons”.

"It has played an important part in the history of Scotland and it’s an honour for me as Provost of West Dunbartonshire to host the final event that marks the end of our yearlong commemorations.”

Depute Provost John Millar, said “I’m really excited to be attending the event on Saturday and hope to see lots of local residents coming along to this is a unique and free opportunity to be part of this historic moment.”
