Cast of Teachers now - Hollywood stardom, soap villains and Strictly Come Dancing

The ground-breaking C4 drama series Teachers celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

It featured young people smoking, acting daft and not taking themselves too seriously – with teachers acting more like pupils than staff.

The fresh-faced cast have gone on to bigger and better things in the two decades since.

So we’re calling the register and asking where they are now?

Some went on to find fame in soaps while others migrated across the pond to become superstars in the US - let's take a look at some of the famous faces from the hit show.

From Hollywood to Albert Square - here's where the cast of Teachers ended up.

Andrew Lincoln

Andrew Lincoln shot to fame in the States as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead (Gene Page/AMC)

Now a huge star in the US and over here because of his role as Rick Grimes in the hit zombie series The Walking Dead, Andrew was already a famous face, having played useless but lovable Egg in This Life during the 1990s.

It wasn’t much of a stretch for him to play lovable rogue Simon in Teacher.

He also made a memorable appearance as Keira Knightley’s obsessed friend in Love Actually in 2003.

Nina Sonsanya

She also had a part in Love Actually with Andrew – as the Prime Minister’s mean assistant who called Martine McCutcheon’s character ‘chubby’.

Nina played Head of Year Jenny, and is now more familiar from popular shows like Last Tango in Halifax, W1A, His Dark Materials, and many more.

Jane Fallon

Not seen onscreen, but the longterm partner of Ricky Gervais, who is also a bestselling novelist, was the series’ executive producer.

Jane had also worked on This Life with Andrew Lincoln, and she was responsible for the soundtrack and some of the funniest scenes, like the donkey that wandered around the building while nobody took any notice.

She's also worked on shows including EastEnders and written books including Getting Rid of Matthew, Strictly Between Us, My Sweet Revenge and Faking Friends.

Raquel Cassidy

Raquel Cassidy played psychology teacher Susan (Channel 4)

Raquel Cassidy played Simon’s best friend Susan, the psychology teacher, and has appeared since in many comedies and dramas since including Doctor Who, Rev and The Worst Witch.

But you’ll recognise her most as the secretive Baxter from Downton Abbey.

Raquel recently confirmed that she’ll be getting back into the ladies’ maid sensible uniform for the Downton sequel movie, due to be released this Christmas.

Kara Tointon

Kara Tointon played naughty Year 11 pupil Pauline in Teachers (Channel 4)

Most famous for being in EastEnders as Dawn Swann, Kara Tointon actually started her career with a bit part on the soap before landing the role of naughty Year 11 pupil Pauline in Teachers.

After finding fame on the show, she returned to her soap roots and went on to win the eighth series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2010.

More recently she starred as Maria in the live ITV version of The Sound of Music and now she’s a mum of two.

Shaun Evans

Shaun Evans in Teachers as a sneaky sixth former (Channel 4)

Shaun, who went on to star as the young Morse in Endeavour, turned up at Summerdown Comprehensive as the foreign languages teacher, and the only gay staff member, John Paul.

But his colleagues thought he was only a sixth former when he first started.

It's a shame their observations skills aren’t as good as the young detective.

Mathew Horne

Matthew Horne starred as RE teacher Ben (Channel 4)

The man who became Gavlar from Gavin & Stacey featured as RE teacher Ben during the fourth series.

After Teachers, he appeared with Catherine Tate and in other series, before a meeting with James Corden - another star of the Channel 4 show - changed his life.

They went on to make hit comedy Gavin & Stacey together.

James Lance

James Lance played womaniser Matt in the show (Channel 4)

As Matt, he replaced Simon and was unusual for a young teacher who was married with kids.

But that didn’t stop Matt having affairs with Penny and another teacher.

His character was killed off in a car accident. James also played the sarcastic Travel Tavern employee Ben in I’m Alan Partridge in the 1990s.

Ellen Thomas

Ellen Thomas played Liz in Teachers (Channel 4)

Ellen joined the show playing Teachers’ funny school secretary, Liz.

In her 40-year acting career, you’ve seen Ellen in which such as Rev, Mount Pleasant, Casualty and Humans, too.

However, soap fans will remember her as the feisty Claudette in EastEnders.

James Corden

James Corden as clever pupil Jeremy in Teachers (Channel 4)

What hasn’t he been in? James, now a successful late-night chat show host in the US, played a clever sixth former, called Jeremy, who wasn’t that much different in maturity than his teachers.

James had already starred in Fat Friends, where he met his co-writer Ruth Jones, the pair created Gavin & Stacey and the rest is comedy history.

He went on to cement his place in showbiz by landing a plumb job succeeding Craig Ferguson as the host of The Late Late Show in America.

He now lives in LA and is part of the city's celebrity set.

Navin Choudhry

Navin Choudhry played IT teacher Kurt (Channel 4)

If you ever wanted to find his character, IT teacher Kurt, he was normally smoking behind the bike sheds or trying to have sex with a single parent.

Since Teachers, Navin’s been in Doctor Foster, Waking The Dead, Doctor Who and even a Star Wars movie. He played a cargo pilot for the Resistance in The Last Jedi in 2017.
