Casemiro names three qualities that make Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag a 'top coach'

Casemiro thinks Erik ten Hag is a perfectionist, with an 'incredible' obsession to win and someone who will not allow standards to slip.

Manchester United recorded their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League last year, but Ten Hag has transformed the fortunes of the club in his first season, which has seen the Reds remain in contention for every major honour in February.

United can end the club's longest trophy drought for 40 years against Newcastle in the League Cup final later this month, while the bookmakers also make them heavy favourites to qualify for the Champions League with a top four finish.

Casemiro was signed from Real Madrid in a deal worth up to £70million in the summer and he's been instrumental in that success.

The midfielder has become one of the first names on the team sheet at Old Trafford and, speaking ahead of the weekend's match against Crystal Palace, he took the opportunity to heap the praise on manager Ten Hag.

"It was because of the drive I still have and the desire that's inside me to learn and try out another league," Casemiro told BBC's Football Focus of his decision to join United. "Obviously, my age played a role, in modern football, a player who's 29, 30, 31, or even 32 is at their peak.

"This is when mentally and physically a player is at their best in their career. At my age, I was still keen to improve. We call him [Ten Hag] the 'Mister', as we say in Brazil, he's the type of coach who will never let the cord slacken.

"He's a very demanding coach, wanting perfection. He knows it's difficult to achieve perfection. In life and football, it's difficult to achieve perfection, but he's a top manager, a top coach, with an incredible obsession to win.

"Next season we want to be in the Champions League and I'll be really frustrated if we don't make it. I'll keep working my socks off to get this in the Champions League. We know that Manchester United will return to glory."
