Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz struggled to consistently read opposing defenses during his one season in the Circle City.
He apparently couldn’t read the writing on the wall, either.
Despite trade rumors swirling for months immediately following the collapse to end the 2021 season, Wentz told the Washington media on Thursday that he felt blindsided by the trade that sent him to the nation’s capital.
“Definitely surprised,” Wentz said in his introductory press conference Thursday. “Any time you’re in a new place, you want it to work out. You want to be there, you want to do the best you can for that team, that organization, that fan base, and God willing it works out for a long time. It didn’t.”
Following a 2020 season that was truly rock bottom for the former No. 2 overall pick, the Colts took a chance on Wentz. He improved in some areas on the surface but his performance over the second half of the season showed his issues wouldn’t be going away anytime soon.
The Colts decided it was best to move on for their future so Chris Ballard struck a deal with the Washington Commanders before the start of the new league year.
Wentz still wonders why the Colts traded him, but acknowledged that his play down the stretch wasn’t good enough.
“Sometimes I wonder the same, honestly,” Wentz said of why he was traded. “It was a year that had highs and lows, ups and downs. The way we finished, the way I finished was poor, and I think that was definitely tough to swallow. Tough to finish like that, especially when we thought we had a chance to really do something special and make a run. We just kind of collapsed, and I didn’t play good enough, well enough at the end there.”
As Wentz goes through his third team trying to salvage his career as a starter, the Colts will be looking for his replacement.
