Carson Wentz replaces Taylor Heinicke at quarteback for the Commanders

The Washington Commanders benched quarterback Taylor Heinicke in the fourth quarterback of the Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Ron Rivera replaced Heinicke with former starter Carson Wentz after back-to-back turnovers.

Heinicke had played well until he fumbled deep in Washington territory after being hit by San Francisco defensive end Nick Bosa. The 49ers would take advantage, kicking a field goal to increase their lead to 27-14.

After the kickoff, Heinicke dropped back to pass, under pressure again, and made a bad decision that San Francisco intercepted.

The 49ers could settle for another field, making it 30-14.

Rivera had seen enough.

Wentz entered the game with the Commanders down 30-14 and around 10 minutes remaining.

Wentz engineered an 11-play 82-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel. Unfortunately for Washington, the two-point attempt was unsuccessful
