Cars 'petrol bombed' at two homes in Airdrie street in 'war zone' incident

Three cars have been petrol bombed on an Airdrie street in what has been described as a "war zone" incident by locals.

Fire crews raced to the scene at around 11.30pm last night to douse the flames at two separate properties on Newbattle Avenue after thugs set the vehicles alight.

Residents told the Daily Record how they heard loud bangs and pops from their homes at the time of the attack.

A Range Rover Evoque parked on the street is understood to have been set ablaze after a petrol bomb was thrown through the window.

A van parked behind the 4x4 also caught fire.

The van behind the car has also been completely burnt out.

A wall at the property has been left with scorch marks after the blaze.

A third motor, which remains parked in driveway further down the street, is also burnt out.

It is understood both victims know each other.

One resident described the street as a 'war zone' and told how a helicopter was in the skies.

Another resident said: "The heat from the fire was so intense you couldn't walk down the street."

A third resident said: "We just heard a bang and there was a flash so we ran out and seen them on fire.

They claimed CCTV of the incident was circulating locally, and continued: "There was a short clip of someone running away just wearing all black.

"But we didn't see a face or much of anything because the camera faces down the street."

Detectives remained on the scene on Tuesday afternoon carrying out door to door enquiries and collecting CCTV footage of the incident.

An SFRS spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 11.43pm on Monday, 14 March to reports of a car alight on Newbattle Avenue, Calderbank, Lanarkshire.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene to extinguish the fire.

"We were alerted again at 11.48pm to reports of a fire affecting another two vehicles on the same street and one appliance was mobilised to that incident.

"Firefighters left after making the area safe. There were no reported casualties."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 11.45pm on Monday, 14 March, to a report of a three vehicles on fire in the Newbattle Avenue area of Calderbank, Airdrie.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

It follows a similar incident whereby following a car was set alight on adjoining Main Street on Thursday, January 20.

Police Scotland confirmed that a 35-year-old man was charged in connection with wilful fire raising and vehicle theft.

However, the force confirmed that the two incidents are not being linked.
