Boris Johnson’s wife Carrie has revealed she spent the first week of 2025 in hospital after contracting a chest infection over Christmas.

The former Conservative aide said she was diagnosed with flu and pneumonia in an Instagram post on Saturday morning.

Ms Johnson praised NHS staff for their care and revealed she has now left the Oxford hospital but added it could take a few weeks for her to make a full recovery.

“I didn’t expect to spend the first week of 2025 in hospital,” she wrote alongside the photo of her hospital bed.

“After having a nasty chest infection for nearly 18 days at home over Christmas, it just got out of hand and I was struggling to breathe properly. The hospital confirmed that I had flu and pneumonia.”

The 36-year-old married the former prime minister in 2021, and they have three children together: son Wilfried, daughter Romy and son Frank. Her post included a second photo showing a dinosaur toy that Wilfried had given her and a keyring from Romy.

Mr Johnson, 60, who served as Conservative prime minister from 2019 to 2022, has been married three times and has at least seven children.

Ms Johnson revealed she was treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital and used her post to encourage her followers to get the flu jab.

“The reason for this post tho is 1) NHS doctors and nurses are the best people on earth. I say it a lot but they have looked after me and my family when we’ve needed it most and I will never not be enormously grateful,” she wrote.

“They are the absolute best of us. I was at the John Radcliffe and I cannot thank them enough. When I was particularly low, one nurse even serenaded me by my bed. Unbelievable kindness.”

She added: “Obviously check with your doctor but my strong advice is to get the bloody flu jab. I really, really wish I had. It totally slipped my mind this year. No guarantee, but I very possibly wouldn’t have spent the last three weeks horribly, horribly ill had I got it.”

“Health and family are everything.”

Her husband has not commented on social media. As prime minister, he was seriously ill in 2020 after contracting Covid-19 and delegated powers to his deputy Dominic Raab.
