Carrie Fisher’s last movie is to finally be released, seven years after her death.
The actress – best known for playing Princess Leia in Star Wars – died in 2016 at the age of 60, just weeks after she wrapped filming on fantasy flick Wonderwell.
The film, which also stars singer Rita Ora and Heartstopper newcomer Sebastian Croft, sees Fisher play the role of oddly mystical Hazel, who shows a young girl disillusioned with the world and her family a portal to what the future may hold for her.
Now seven years on, director Vlad Marsavin has revealed that movie lovers will finally get the chance to see it.
He said that it’s been a “perilous” journey to get it ready for release between the challenges of “Covid lockdowns and of course the passing of our wonderful Carrie Fisher”.
Despite the various difficulties, the filmmaker said now “is the perfect time to share her magical on screen moments as Hazel”.
Speaking to Deadline, Marsavin said the star’s death was “very emotional for the whole team” and remembered her being “full of energy” both on and off screen.
He went on to recall how the cast and crew celebrated Fisher’s 60th birthday while shooting the movie.
The director shared: “After a night shoot, which went on until 2am, she invited the whole team to celebrate with her and the party ended up being shut down by the police because it was deemed a little too loud.”
Weighing in on the film getting a release date, popstar Rita Ora added: “Working alongside Carrie Fisher was one of those experiences that you never forget.
“I can’t wait for the world to see this intriguing and magical world of Wonderwell.”
Wonderwell’s rights were acquired by distributor Vertical, and is currently set for a limited theatrical run in the US in AMC theatres from June 23 before being released digitally.
