Carrie and Boris Johnson welcome birth of third child

PA Wire

Carrie Johnson has announced that she and former prime minister Boris Johnson have welcomed their third child together, a son named Frank Alfred Odysseus Johnson.

The former political activist, 35, shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday (11 July) and confirmed that she gave birth on 5 July at 9.15am. Referring to her newborn son’s middle names, she joked: “Can you guess which name my husband chose?”

The name “Odysseus” comes from the mythological Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Greek poet Homer’s epic poem, “Odyssey”. Boris studied Latin and Ancient Greek at university and has previously recited Homer’s poem “The Iliad” during an event.

Carrie shared several photographs of the family’s newest arrival, including one of her cradling him in her arms and another of the couple’s eldest son Wilfred pulling a blanket over his baby brother.

She wrote in the caption: “A week of Frankie [red heart emoji]. Welcome to the world Frank Alfred Odysseus Johnson born 5 July at 9.15am. (Can you guess which name my husband chose?!”

She added: “Am loving every minute of the sleepy baby bubble. Seeing my older two embrace their new brother with such joy and excitmenet has been the most wonderful thing to see. We are all very smitten.”

Carrie thanked the NHS maternity team at University College London Hospital, adding: “They really are the most amazing, caring people. I feel such immense gratitude.”

The new mother-of-three joked: “Now, can anyone recommend any good series/box sets to binge while breastfeeding?”

Boris, 59, and Carrie are now parents to Wilfred, who was born on 29 April 2020, Romy, who was born in December 2021, and Frank. The couple have been married since May 2021.

Carrie first announced that she was pregnant with their third child in May this year. In an Instagram post showing her holding her two older children’s hands, she wrote: “New team member arriving in just a few weeks. I’ve felt pretty exhausted for much of the last eight months but we can’t wait to meet this little one.

“Wilf is [very] excited about being a big brother again and has been chattering about it non-stop. Don’t think Romy has a clue what’s coming... she soon will!”

In 2021, before the birth of her daughter, Carrie opened up about suffering a miscarriage that left her “heartbroken”. She called Romy a “rainbow baby” after she was born, a term that refers to a child born after the loss of a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal birth.

In a post about the miscarriage, Carrie said she felt “incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I’ve also felt like a bag of nerves”. However, she added that she found “real comfort” to hear from other people who have experienced a similar loss.

Before marrying Boris, Carrie was the first unmarried partner of a prime minister to move into 10 Downing Street, and was also the first partner of a serving prime minister in Downing Street to become a first-time mother.

Boris has at least five other children with two other women. He was previously married to Marina Wheeler from 1993 to 2020 and shares three adult children with her: 29-year-old Lara Lettice, 27-year-old Milo Arthur, 25-year-old Cassica Peaches, and 23-year-old Theodore Apollo.

The Conservative politician, who resigned as an MP in June after he was found to have misled the House of Commons over Partygate, is also father to a daughter named Stephanie, who he shares with Helen MacIntyre, with whom he had an affair.

Carrie and Boris wed in a secret ceremony at Westminster Cathedral in 2021, two years after they got engaged. She is Boris’s hird wife, as he was previously married to Wheeler. Prior to his second marriage, he was married to Allegra Mostyn-Owen from 1987 to 1993.
