The husband of a British woman killed in Greece has been found guilty of her murder.

Helicopter pilot Babis Anagnostopoulos, 34, suffocated his 20-year-old wife Caroline Crouch to death and hanged their puppy Roxy at their home in an Athens suburb last May.

He now faces up to 20 years in prison after he was convicted of premeditated murder by three full-time judges and four jurors at the Athens Mixed Jury Court.

He was also found guilty of animal abuse and two counts of perverting the course of justice.

In May officers stormed the couple’s home and found her dead and the body of her puppy hanging by his lead from a banister.

In a botched attempt to evade justice, the pilot told police she had been killed by armed robbers.

He had previously described the murderer as tall, dark-skinned, overweight and under 30 years old.

However, after eight hours of police interrogation Anagnostopoulos confessed and said he lied because he did not want their 11-month-old daughter Lydia to grow up without parents.

Police were able to unravel his lies after data collected from a fitness tracker on Ms Crouch’s wrist showed her heart had stopped beating before the alleged break-in took place.

Tracking data from Anagnostopoulos’ home also showed him moving from the attic to the basement of the house and back again, despite claiming to have spent all night tied to the bed.

Data from a security camera at the home also showed its memory card had been removed at 1.20am - again, hours before the alleged break-in took place.

The couple’s infant daughter was at home at the time of Ms Crouch’s death but was not harmed.

Ms Crouch’s parents applied for full custody of the child last year.
