The Carolina Panthers have made the decision to part ways with longtime linebacker Shaq Thompson, as reported on Tuesday. Thompson, who was on track to become an unrestricted free agent, was informed by the Panthers that they will not be extending his contract.
Thompson, who has been with the Panthers for a decade, is now expected to explore other opportunities in free agency. Despite his long tenure with the team, Thompson has been plagued by injuries, limiting him to just six games over the past two seasons.
The 30-year-old linebacker was originally drafted by the Panthers in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Throughout his time with the team, Thompson has amassed an impressive 752 tackles, placing him fourth in franchise history behind notable names such as Thomas Davis, Luke Kuechly, and Mike Minter.
Thompson's rookie season in 2015 saw him play in the Super Bowl, and he has since been honored as a team captain on five occasions. Panthers general manager Dan Morgan expressed gratitude for Thompson's contributions, highlighting his leadership, dedication, and positive influence on his teammates both on and off the field.
Despite a standout performance in 2022 with a career-high 135 tackles, Thompson's subsequent seasons were marred by injuries. A broken ankle in Week 2 of the 2023 season and a torn Achilles tendon in Week 4 of the following year prematurely ended his campaigns.
Over his 10 seasons with the Panthers, Thompson appeared in a total of 123 games, leaving a lasting impact on the team's defense. The Panthers organization wishes Thompson the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.
