Carol Vorderman tells single This Morning fan to date younger men and dishes her tips

Carol Vorderman gave an insight into her dating life as she became agony aunt to single This Morning callers on Friday's show.

A number of viewers rang up to speak to Carol, 61, who has been open about her 'many friends' in past - and her co-adviser Gyles Brandreth, 74.

Friday's segment saw a caller named Helen, 29, ask for help in finding someone who is "serious" about a relationship as she hasn't had "any luck" with online dating.

Carol responded by saying that, generally speaking, women in their twenties may look for an older partner but she should perhaps consider someone slightly younger than them.

"I think realistically, and it is a generalisation, you get to a certain age and women tend to think 'oh actually I want to settle down'. I was I think about 28 or 29," she explained.

The mother-of-two recalled wanting to find someone to have children with at that stage in her life. She further commented: "That in a sense is about an age thing."

She added: "Generally in your twenties, women look for men who are slightly older."

Providing an example of such, Carol said: "So if you're 24, you look for someone who's 30".

She continued in the segment: "[You] get to 29. It's a whole new generation now.

"Look for someone younger," she told Helen.

"I think there's so many women who are slightly older now and the younger guys really, really want to commit to them because they like their maturity," Carol added.

Encouraging the viewer to consider dating someone who is younger than her, she said: "I would maybe switch it up a bit Helen, in terms of possibly the age groups that you're looking for."

They spoke to viewers who wanted dating advice (ITV)

It wasn't the only piece of dating advice that Carol - who has spoken about her own personal life over the years - provided. She also encouraged a viewer to be "proactive".

The suggestion came after caller Jessica - who said she was in her fifties - admitted to being "fussy". The viewer had revealed that she had a list of criteria for potential partners.

Discussing Jessica's interest in a partner who likes the outdoors, Carol proposed she do activities related to such. She said: "Instead of looking for someone, just go and do."

Carol previously told This Morning fans that she doesn't believe in keeping to one man anymore and has many 'special friends.'

"Our mothers told us that we should marry when we were still 18 or 19 or 20, so we grew up with that convention that you should find one partner for life. My view is not quite like that," she said. Carol went on: "I've never felt freer. So I have ignored the looking for one person and I have a number of what I've called 'special friends'.

"I don't really want to marry again. I don't really want to live with a man again. Have to look after him all the time. But this is a time to break this nonsense taboo, which is a person should only be looking for one other person that satisfies everything in their life. That's hell."

She continued: "They don't know each other, but they know about it. It's a very honest relationship. One of them has gone on for many more years than my marriage. Yeah, it's over 10 years. Another is seven. He's an astronaut. He rang me from the space station."

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV and ITVX.
