Carol Vorderman shares support for Gary Lineker amid BBC row

Carol Vorderman has taken to social media in support of Gary Lineker who has hit headlines following a BBC row. Lineker, 62, was asked to step back from his hosting duties on Match Of The Day after becoming embroiled in a row over impartiality.

The host became embroiled in a row over impartiality after comparing the language used to launch a new Government asylum seeker policy with 1930s Germany on Twitter. Former England footballers and MOTD regulars, including Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, announced on Friday that they would be boycotting the show in solidarity with Lineker.

Jeremy Clarkson weighed in on the topic with words of support, after Ian Wright announced that he would not be taking part in tonight's show, and the support doesn't stop there.

Another celebrity, Carol Vorderman, posted a clip from outside BBC HQ today (March 11) urging fans to watch the footage. According to the Mirror, the footage shows a statue of George Orwell, along with a quote about freedom, reading: "If Liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."

Speaking over the footage, she said: "So I’m at BBC HQ in London and there’s a wonderful statue of George Orwell. Look at the words, very apt at the moment."

Carol's fans rallied to share their support, with one tweeting: "Thank you Carol for reminding us of this. George Orwell sent us a powerful message in his writing. Lest we forget"

Another said: "Exactly... where is our liberty? I bet BBC bosses walk past this every day and pay no attention to it. Whilst funding the very people trying to take it away."

What did Lineker do?

Lineker has been reprimanded by the BBC after responding on Twitter to a Home Office video in which Home Secretary Suella Braverman unveiled the Government’s plans to stop migrants crossing the Channel on small boats.

The ex-England striker wrote: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the ’30s.”

The BBC said it had decided that Lineker would be stepping back from hosting duties on MOTD until they had “an agreed and clear position on his use of social media”.
