The Birkenhead-born comedian died suddenly aged 67, his partner Andre Portasio has confirmed. Former Countdown presenter, Carol, was one of the first to share a heartfelt message for her beloved friend.
Taking to Twitter at 5.49am, Carol asked a heartbreaking question as she said: "Paul O'Grady. Already giving them raucous, ripping up the rulebook, mischief making, calling it out, loving hell in heaven, Paul, what are we meant to do without you?"

She expanded her grief onto Instagram, later in the day, as she shared a cheeky picture of Paul pointing at the camera, posing with one raised eyebrow. Carol claimed that the tragic news had "not sunk in yet" as she fondly remembered her friend.
She wrote: "So many ten hour lunches, so many stories, so many memories...remember that time Paul after a @prideofbritain awards we ended up in a green room with Shirley Bassey? Just six of us, till 4am. Shirl singing her heart out, you two dancing, you being genius funny till I could hardly breathe....
"Or the time at Cilla's funeral when Bishop Tom gave you ten Hail Marys and 3 Our Fathers as penance after your eulogy? Or that one where we sitting outside a posh restaurant in Mayfair and.....Well that's another story..
"I f***ing loved your ferocity, your sense of right, the fighter in you, when you raged against this 'stinking government' (Paul's words).....when you set the world on fire."
Carol added: "We don't know what to do without you Paul. There was only ever one of you. Not sunk in yet.
"All I know is when I go eventually please be there with a glass of something cold, and a fight in your eyes, and a laugh in your voice. God you are loved."
Fans agreed with how loved Paul was as they flooded the comments with memories of him. Claire said: "Lovely words, cant imagine anyone having anything but lovely things to say about him. Absolute legend and should have been knighted in my opinion."
Percy said: "I never met Paul nor saw him perform. But from a distance he appeared to me to be a force of nature, a force for good. I'm sorry for your loss. X"
A third user added: "Heartbroken. He was our local legend on the Wirral. Much loved and respected. So sorry for your loss Carol. Such amazing memories for you. He will be missed by so many humans and animals."
