Carol Vorderman bursts with pride after daughter's PhD achievements focusing on cancer research

Carol Vorderman has shared a touching tribute on social media after her daughter achieved her doctorate degree.

The former Countdown host posted a long message praising her daughter Katie King's PhD achievements despite the "struggles she's overcome".

Mother to daughter Katie and son Cameron, she highlighted how "lucky" she was to be her mum and admitted "single parenting ain't all bad".

She took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message on her daughter's accomplishments: "Yesterday my girl Katie @katie.science passed her 'viva'....an interrogation of her PhD thesis by a panel of examiners. She can now call herself DOCTOR KATIE KING.

"It's all she has ever wanted to be since bring [sic] a little girl. A Cambridge research scientist and then to become an astronaut....like you do."

Carol Vorderman explained how her daughter is currently part of a research team at Cambridge University and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, focusing her university thesis on the delivery of a new cancer drug.

Her daughter's research concentrates on the use of the drug in place of a chemotherapy technique and specifically how to then deliver it to the cancer tumour, according to Carol.

"Hopefully at some point, this will help cancer sufferers to some degree," she added in her message.

She went on to re-emphasise her pride as her mother: "So here's me as her Mum. So proud. I know all the struggles she's overcome, and the hard graft she's put in to become this fine young woman."

"I don't want this feeling to stop. She's on top of the world...yeah xx And quite honestly I am too and so is her little brother Cameron."

She concluded her message by saying "what a lucky mother" she is, adding "single parenting ain't that bad after all".

Katie King completed her PhD degree at the end of last year and had recently faced a panel at her university as part of her thesis.

She has been likened to her striking resemblance to her mother Carol, reports The Sun.

Last year the 61-year-old announced she had sold her mansion near Bristol and to embark on a new adventure as she converts a van into a travelling home.

Carol put the mansion she bought for £1.1 million in 2007 back on the market for £2.6 million earlier this year. She usually shares images from a flat thought to be in Clifton.
