Carnell Tate becomes earliest true freshman to lose black stripe at Ohio State

Black stripe alert! True freshman, Carnell Tate, had his black stripe removed on Saturday to become the first freshman this season to receive the honor. Not only is he the first true freshman to shed his black stripe this season, but he also joins an elite club of freshmen to have it removed in the spring and he becomes the earliest to ever lose it.

Tony Gerdeman, lead writer for Buckeye Huddle shared the news on his personal Twitter account. Tate tops an impressive list of true freshmen that lost their black stripe in spring. Garrett Wilson and Marvin Harrison Jr. are also on that list, which is pretty good company to keep.

Tate was the No. 9 rated wide receiver in the 2023 class and the No. 59 player overall according to 247Sports composite.

Obviously, Tate has had expanded opportunities with both Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka both out of spring practice with injuries. But even with that, players have to compete and make the most of their opportunities and Carnell Tate is clearly doing that.

As spring practice continues on, we’ll keep you in the loop as more players prove their worthiness to the coaching staff that they belong.
