Carlton Town enables Bitcoin payments for tickets, food and drink

A football club has announced it will be accepting matchday payments in digital currency during the new season.

Carlton Town will accept Bitcoin from fans buying tickets, food and drink at their stadium on Stoke Lane as an alternative to card and cash.

Digital payments will start being accepted from this weekend when the club hosts a massive pre-season game against Merthyr Town.

The club said it is hoping the decision to accept Bitcoin will help attract 'a different audience'.

A statement on the club's site read: "After several months of discussions, planning and preparations, Carlton Town will be one of only a handful of football clubs in the UK that will accept Bitcoin payments throughout the ground this coming season.

The decision to accept Bitcoin as a method of payment at the bar has come on the back of further discussions with sponsorship partners and has a view to increase the reach of the club to a different audience and to allow people to pay as they choose when visiting the Bill Stokeld Stadium, encouraging both the use and conversations about Bitcoin."

It added: "With relatively few businesses accepting Bitcoin as a payment method, Carlton Town are setting themselves ahead of the rest of the field and showing a clear intent towards planning for the future."

The club also said it would be hosting Bitcoin events in the future including meet-ups, workshops and classes.

It said the only difference customers will see is the creation of a separate terminal accepting Bitcoin for matchday entry to the ground.
