In a competitive golf match held at Wynn Golf Club, four PGA Tour professionals and four Formula 1 drivers faced off in the inaugural Netflix Cup on Tuesday night in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, a small disaster occurred at the end.

The competition consisted of an eight-hole team scramble match, where the top two teams advanced to the last hole to decide the Cup winner.

In the end, Tony Finau and Pierre Gasly squared off against Justin Thomas and Carlos Sainz of Formula 1, with the winner being decided by a dice roll to determine who went first and closest-to-the-pin competition.

With Sainz, Thomas came close to winning the championship in the end.

“I didn’t honestly think I could get it there, cause I thought [Tony Finau’s shot] was gonna be nice, so I just hit a little sling hook in there,” said Thomas after the match in an interview.

“I was glad to finally help my partner out,” he added.

“We are the first-ever Netflix Cup winners so it deserves … yeah, we’ll go out [tonight],” said Sainz.

However, there won’t be a dice roll to determine who gets to carry home the prize with the victorious duo. This is due to an incident that occurred at the award presentation that resulted in the damage of the Netflix Cup trophy, for which the winners bear the sole responsibility.

Wearing checkered-flag blazers, Thomas and Sainz are seen on a little platform celebrating their victory in a film shot on the day of the event. Sainz is seen in the video clutching the Netflix Cup trophy in his left hand and a bottle of champagne in his right. However, the trophy escapes his grasp and falls to the floor next to the podium as he tries to lift it to his head as the photographers focus on him.

When Thomas strolls up to Sainz’s side of the podium, he discovers the trophy broken into four pieces, and both players hold their palms to their heads in disbelief.

Although it’s not the best way to end their triumph, a win is still a win for team Thomas/Sainz.

This Sunday, November 19, is the date of Formula 1’s inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will be the competitors’ next stop.
