Carlos Corberan lure obvious after ex-Leeds United coach doubles down on West Brom

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley may be waltzing to the Championship title, but the Belgian falls short to reported former Leeds United target Carlos Corberan when it comes to the best performing manager in the second tier.

The swift turnaround of managers in the Championship this season means there have been 38 different permanent bosses in the dugouts this term, with Rob Edwards and Alex Neil having taken charge of two clubs. And despite the Clarets being seven points clear at the summit and 17 points clear of third, it is the highly sought after Corberan who has actually picked up the most points per game in the matches they have overseen.

Corberan’s West Brom have taken 30 points from the 13 games he has been in charge, giving him a points per game average of 2.31 - the best in the division. Kompany’s 65 points from 29 games puts him on 2.24.

It is no wonder that the Baggies moved swiftly to hand the 39-year-old a contract extension on Tuesday evening to wade off the reported interest from the movers and shakers at Leeds United.

Middlesbrough’s climb up the table under Michael Carrick is reflected by the former Manchester United man’s third place on 2.21. Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom is fourth, with the Blades averaging exactly two points per game. Luton manager Rob Edwards, despite losing his job at Watford, is fifth on 1.78 with Hull boss Liam Rosenior (1.67) sixth after an impressive start to his tenure at the MKM Stadium.

Of the 10 managers who remain in their jobs from the opening day of the season, Birmingham manager John Eustace is the lowest-placed with 1.21 points per game. At the bottom of the table it’s no surprise to see Kolo Toure whose seven games in charge of Wigan yielded just two points.

Also down there are former West Brom boss Steve Bruce (0.85) and ex-Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder (0.91), who both saw their teams fly up the table following their departures.
