Carlos Alcaraz advances to fourth round as opponent retires injured

Carlos Alcaraz advances to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

In a rather short-lived third-round encounter at the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz effortlessly advanced into the fourth round as his opponent, Shang Juncheng, retired due to injury early in the third set. Alcaraz, the tournament's No. 2 seed, was leading with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-1, 1-0 when Shang, who had his right thigh heavily strapped from the start, made the decision to call it quits after just 66 minutes of play.

While Alcaraz would have preferred a more competitive match to secure his spot in the next round, he expressed his enthusiasm at reaching the second week of the Australian Open for the first time. Notably, the young tennis star missed out on last year's event due to his own injury. 'Last year I was watching the matches from my couch, wishing to be in the second week,' Alcaraz shared. 'This is my first time in the second week at the Australian Open, and it feels special.'

Moving forward, Alcaraz is set to face Miomir Kecmanovic in the fourth round. Kecmanovic's path to the next stage was far more dramatic, as he saved a match point to defeat last year's semifinalist, Tommy Paul. The thrilling encounter ended with a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0 in Kecmanovic's favor. Reflecting on his victory, Kecmanovic admitted to not fully comprehending how he managed to secure the win. 'Honestly, I have no idea,' he confessed. 'I guess it was just supposed to be my day today. I had a bit more luck, and I played some fantastic tennis at the end. I'm really happy to be in the fourth round again.'

Meanwhile, No. 9 seed Hubert Hurkacz continued his impressive run by defeating No. 21 seed Ugo Humbert in a thrilling four-set match. After dropping the first set, Hurkacz bounced back to claim victory with a final score of 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-3. This marks the second consecutive year that Hurkacz has reached the fourth round at the Australian Open. In the next round, he is set to face the wildcard entry from France, Arthur Cazaux, who secured a comfortable win against 28th-ranked Tallon Griekspoor, with a final score of 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

As the tournament progresses, these players are vying for their chance to make a deep run in one of the biggest tennis competitions in the world. The Australian Open never fails to deliver exhilarating matches filled with surprises, and this year's edition is shaping up to be no different. Tennis enthusiasts and fans alike eagerly anticipate the exciting matchups that lie ahead, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this captivating tournament.
