Carlisle Dixon's chimney: First picture of man who died hanging from 290ft chimney as family pay tribute

This is the first picture of a man who died in Carlisle after hanging from a 290ft chimney for 14 hours.

Cumbria Police have identified the man as Robert Philip Longcake, known as Phil.

Mr Longcake climbed the chimney in the early hours of Monday morning and was first spotted at 2.20am bare-chested and hanging upside down.

A major rescue operation was undertaken, involving fire services and the use of a helicopter.

After being identified by police on Tuesday, Mr Longcake's family paid tribute to him, calling him a "strong, brave man who achieved a lot in his short life".

"Sadly, due to recent disclosures he made about historic trauma he suffered, Phil was battling with his mental health, with the love and support of his family and health professionals whilst trying to overcome this" they said.

His family added: "He was a keen motorcyclist and would often spend weekends away with his son, Robert. He loved fell walking with his dog Ted and was a passionate musician who played the guitar, piano and accordion. He also loved to sing, and did his own covers of popular music.

"Phil was a fantastic granddad to his three grandchildren, James, George and William. They adored him."

Mr Longcake's family wrote that they had many wonderful and happy times with him, and these memories will be treasured by his loved ones.

They asked that any donations be made in Phil's name to MIND, a mental health charity.
