Irish social media and radio sensation, Carl Mullan, has been revealed as the ninth celebrity to join the next series of Dancing With The Stars. And joyously announced, “I can’t dance!”
Guaranteed to be a favourite with audiences, even if he is awkward on the dance floor, the 2FM breakfast host confirmed on Thursday he would be taking on the new challenge despite being “a bag of nerves”.
The 32-year-old announced he’d be throwing his hat in the ring for the Glitterball trophy and said: “The only thing doing somersaults right now is my stomach - I’m a combination of a bag of nerves but also absolutely buzzing!”
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I can’t wait to get going. It’s completely outside my comfort zone, I’ve never done any form of dancing before, but I’m determined to get my head down and do everything possible to make sure my partner and I get all the way to the final!”
Following in the sparkly shoes of fellow comedians Bernard O’Shea, Neil Delamere, Des Bishop and Fred Cooke, Mullan was the obvious choice to entertain viewers in January. And like RTE personalities Des Cahill and Marty Morrissey who previously took part in DWTS, Mullan is sure to have social media on fire in response to his quirky dance routines.
Gushing about their latest celeb casting, a DWTS insider said, “If Carl could pull off some moves like the iconic Austin Powers, Dessie (Cahill) Swim, he’s on to a winner. The public will just keep voting for him for the craic.”
Carl’s career skyrocketed back in 2021 when he began hosting RTE’s 2FM Breakfast with Doireann Garrihy and Donncha O’Callaghan.
The show quickly became a favourite among early risers and helped the funny man garner an impressive 284,000 Instagram followers and 101,000 TikTok followers.
Carl’s social media content regularly goes viral with his hilarious takes on everything that it means to be Irish from Ryanair flight landings, to the traditional mammy.
Carl was launched into the public eye as the ‘crash test dummy’ on The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene.
The Dubliner, who is clearly not afraid of taking on a challenge, even went full Magic Mike and put his dance moves on the show for the series - so he’ll be hoping to bring some of that experience to the dance floor in 2023.
It’s been a busy couple of years for Carl, as he welcomed his first child Daibhí in 2021, and married his long-term partner Aisling in 2022.
Beauty entrepreneur Suzanne Jackson, former Ireland rugby star Shane Byrne,
footballer Stephanie Roche, Glee star Damien McGinty, drag queen Panti Bliss, former state pathologist Dr. Marie Cassidy and Eurovision singer Brooke Scullion are among the star-studded lineup this season. The last two celebrities for the show are due to be announced soon.
