After words like 'quiet quitting', and 'moonlighting' becoming common at the workplace, 'career cushioning' is the new word that is now trending. The reason: With talks of an impending recession, many people are now trying to safeguard their work by keeping a plan B option open in case they lose their job.
The term 'Career cushioning' is derived from the dating slang 'Cushioning'. It's used to describe the strategy wherein a person who is already dating someone, keeps their options open mainly to reduce any (emotional) hurt incase they have a break-up. In the same way, career cushioning is when a person keeps their options of other work opportunities open fearing a job loss due to recession.
“Career cushioning is on the rise because workers are increasingly worried about their jobs... Faced with a looming recession, discussion around layoffs and being made redundant has soared on Glassdoor. In response to the worsening economic uncertainty, workers are getting jittery and ‘career cushioning’," Jill Cotton, a careers expert at Glassdoor, said in a report by The Stylist UK.
