Cardinals’ offense will look different until Kyler Murray’s return

The Arizona Cardinals play a waiting game while quarterback Kyler Murray recovers from offseason ACL surgery. In the meantime, either Colt McCoy or David Blough are expected to start the season as the starter until Murray’s return.

Cardinals fans should expect the offense to look different after his return.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon understands that Murray can do things the other quarterbacks cannot and, as such, the offense should look different.

“We’ll just tailor-fit what we’re doing with the offense around that guy, and then when Kyler gets back in, we’ll tailor-fit the offense around him,” Gannon told NFL Media’s Sam Wyche over the weekend at the annual league meting. “You know, a system will be in place, you might just call it a little bit differently with the guy that’s pulling the trigger.”

This isn’t really any different than we have seen before, though. When Colt McCoy started in place of Murray, the offense had a different game plan.

One would expect far fewer designed run plays for McCoy or Blough. Perhaps the number of downfield throws would decrease for them as well.

Whatever the differences, things will probably open up more once Murray returns and is healthy.
