Cardinals LB Isaiah Simmons to be used ‘in a couple of spots’

New Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has been purposely vague on many offensive and defensive specifics this offseason as the team prepares for its first season with him leading them.

However, while he did not give any details, Gannon did reveal a little bit of their plan for linebacker Isaiah Simmons.

Simmons has been practicing with the safeties but is still listed on the roster as a linebacker.

Gannon admitted that Simmons will have multiple roles.

“As we move forward, I want to see him get comfortable in a couple of spots we are playing him,” he told reporters on Thursday.

This is the first time he has suggested anything even close to specific for Simmons.

Gannon’s mantra this offseason has been about finding where guys are able to use their skillsets and then use them that way.

“He’s obviously a unique talent and he can do a lot of things for you defensively and schematically because he can match up with different people,” Gannon explained. “He’s got a skillset that he can cover slot, he can cover a tight end, he can play stacked, he can play deep, so we’re going to try to use him the best way we can.”

Simmons was used in multiple roles over the last three seasons, playing linebacker, lining up off the edge, covering in the slot and even playing some deep safety.

While Gannon did not reveal much, we know he would like to use Simmons in more than one place this season.
