Cardinals have many late-season additions signed for 2024

The Arizona Cardinals went through a lot of different players on the roster in 2023. They made some late-season acquisitions with waiver claims, free agent signings and even signings from off their own practice squad.

In many cases, the Cardinals kept a slightly longer-term perspective. Many of these players were signed through 2024 rather than for just the remainder of the 2023 season.

It appears to be a smart move, giving the players some offseason stability and allowing the Cardinals to have players with a bit of a head start on what they will do next season.

These are the late-season additions to the roster who are signed through this next season.

LB Tyreke Smith

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Smith was signed off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad in December. They signed him through 2024. He logged 10 defensive snaps in the Cardinals’ final two games.

TE Travis Vokelek

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals signed Vokolek off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad in December after Geoff Swaim got hurt and was placed on injured reserve. He was signed through 2024. He appeared in the final two games, logging 40 offensive snaps and four on special teams.

LB Trevor Nowaske

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals claimed Nowaske off waivers after the Detroit Lions cut him. He was an undrafted rookie who appeared in two games for Detroit and played on special teams. He is signed through 2024.

CB Divaad Wilson

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals signed Wilson off their practice squad to the active roster but signed him through 2024. He appeared in two games for the Cardinals and started once.

LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams

 Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Maddox-Williams was signed to the active roster from the practice squad in December when Josh Woods was placed on injured reserve. He was signed through 2024.

DL Naquan Jones

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Jones was signed to the practice squad in November and then signed to the active roster in December. He played in four games for the Cardinals to finish the season, starting once, and had nine tackles and a tackle for loss.

They signed him through 2024.

Had they not signed him through 2024, he would have been a restricted free agent.

DL Phil Hoskins

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Hoskins spent a lot of the season on the practice squad but was signed to the active roster through next season late in December. He would have been an exclusive rights free agent so it would not have mattered.

He played in five games, starting once, and had eight total tackles.

DL Roy Lopez

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Lopez was not a late-season addition. He was signed to the practice squad in September and signed to the active roster the same week.

He was signed through 2024, which was smart because he would have been a restricted free agent in March if he weren’t signed through next year. He had 42 tackles in 14 games (five starts) for the Cardinals.
