Cardinals double up on cornerbacks in new 2-round mock draft

One might think the Arizona Cardinals have a pressing need at cornerback this offseason. They really don’t. They signed Sean Murphy-Bunting to a three-year deal last offseason. They drafted Max Melton in the second round last year. Garrett Williams looks great. They took Elijah Jones in the third round last year, although he did not play all season, and they like Star Thomas.

So while a team can always get more help at the position, this new mock draft from ESPN’s Matt Miller doesn’t make much sense.

In his new two-round projections, he has the Cardinals taking a cornerback in both the first and second rounds.

In the first round, he has the Cardinals selecting Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron, saying how he would be a good fit inside, seemingly forgetting the Cardinals have a very good inside corner in Williams.

Then, in the second round, he has them drafting East Carolina cornerback Shavon Rebel Jr., who tore his ACL in September. So not only are they doubling up at the position, they are using a second-round pick who might not be ready to play.

Teams can always improve at cornerback and you can never have enough players to cover receivers, but the Cardinals have used a second-round pick, two third-round picks on cornerbacks and signed a free agent corner to good money in the last two offseasons.

Maybe they use one of their first two picks on a cornerback if he is too high on their board not to take. They certainly won’t draft two with their first two picks.

That is just irresponsible.
