Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon declares every job on roster ‘is up for grabs’

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has preached competition ever since he was hired as head coach. He continues to do so.

With the start of training camp, he is guaranteeing no player on the roster.

Rookie fifth-round quarterback Clayton Tune has been getting second-team reps on offense behind Colt McCoy, currently slated to start at quarterback while Kyler Murray recovers from his knee injury.

But Tune has a chance to even supplant McCoy, Gannon says.

“All spots are open for grabs on the team right now,” Gannon said Friday when he was asked if Tune could potentially be the Cardinals’ primary backup quarterback on the team.

“Every day’s a chance to compete and get better,” he said.

Now, the truth is that not every roster spot is up for grabs, not really. Several players are locks to make the team and their contracts make it impossible or difficult not to have a spot reserved.

However, this is the mantra a head coach has to stand by. Everyone has a chance.

It creates hope and increased competition, which should in turn improve the team because players are preparing better.

An offer for Cardinals fans
