The Arizona Cardinals made what appears to be an upgrade at running back. The team announced Wednesday it was awarded a waiver claim for running back Michael Carter, who was released this week by the New York Jets.
Carter was drafted in the fourth round in 2021 by the Jets out of North Carolina and had a solid rookie season, rushing for 639 yards and four touchdowns on 4.3 yards per attempt. He also added 36 receptions for 325 yards.
He averaged only 3.5 yards per attempt in 2022 and fell out of the rotation this season behind Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook. He has eight rushing attempts in nine games this season.
For his career, he has averaged 4.0 yards per carry and has 1,079 career rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
He immediately becomes the most accomplished back on the Cardinals behind starter James Conner. He and Emari Demercado, once he is healthy, will likely battle for the backup role as Keaontay Ingram has struggled this season.
