Cardiff to get UK's first Proud Mary 'party pub' as as autumn opening planned

Work has begun on the stunning new "party pub" which is set to open in Cardiff city centre later this year. The former Brains-owned Yard Bar & Kitchen in St Mary Street is being converted into a Proud Mary Pub with the new venue offering live music and sporting action as well as a range of food and drink options.

The pub chain is owned by European nightlife group Rekom who are behind brands like Pryzm and Steinbeck & Shaw and recently helped bring Heidi's Bier Bar to Cardiff. While there are already branches in Denmark, Finland, and Norway the new pub will be the first Proud Mary branch to open in the UK.

It will replace the popular Brains pub which has been a long-standing fixture on the bustling city centre street, forming part of the capital's Brewery Quarter. Hoarding emblazoned with the Proud Mary logo has now been erected outside the former Yard site with a promise that venue is 'opening soon'.

Rekom, which has invested £1.2m in the new pub, has announced that the venue will open at the end of October in time for Wales' autumn international clash against New Zealand at the Principality Stadium on November 5. The venue, which has a capacity of 950, will operate over two floors and will be a "relaxed, party pub with the blended fun and festive atmosphere of a German bier hall". It will be opening every day at 12pm, closing at 2am between Sunday and Thursday and at 3am on Friday and Saturday.

A range of drinks and beer will be on offer including traditional bar snacks, pizzas, and burgers as well as two draught ales from Tiny Rebel. The pub will show live sport, including football and rugby, on 12 TV screens with those desperate not to miss a moment able to book front-row seats with table service.

Local bands will be given a platform to perform with live music featuring on Friday and Saturday nights. Music bingo and quiz nights will run during the week while the venue will also feature a dancefloor for those wanting to enjoy a late-night party.

The pub chain are set to expand even further in Wales following the opening of the new venue with a second Proud Mary branch scheduled to open in Swansea's Wind Street in early 2023. Following the success of Heidi's Bier Bar in the Welsh capital the regional director of Rekom, Graeme Da Silva, said he is confident that Proud Mary will prove just as popular.

“We are delighted to continue investing in Cardiff, which is such a vibrant and exciting city," he said. "Heidi’s has exceeded all expectations and Pryzm continues to be one of our most successful clubs so we are confident Proud Mary Pub will prove to be a similar hit.”

He added: “Whether you want to meet friends for a beer, watch sport, take part in a pub quiz, or enjoy a late-night party, Proud Mary Pub delivers. We will be working 24/7 to open in time for when Wales takes on New Zealand – hopefully, the result will give us double cause for celebration.”
