Cardiff restaurant Poca announces opening date after fixing issue that 'broke the camel's back'

After the news that it had been forced to delay its opening date by a week as a result of a gas-related issue, small plates restaurant Poca has now announced that it will be open to serve the people of Cardiff from 5pm on Thursday, July 6.

The new Pontcanna-based restaurant is being launched by renowned Cardiff chef Antonio Simone, who heads up Alium in Barry. Poca was set to open its doors on Thursday, June 29, in the former site of the much loved La Cuina, but now plans to open this week.

It revealed the news on Monday, July 3, via Instagram just five days after confirming the postponement with a post that read: "Over the last few days we have been showered with umpteen issues which we have overcome to meet our deadline for opening day. Sadly, we encountered the straw that broke the camel's back. A large issue with the gas supply was identified and it's literally unsafe to open as it stands. So, we have, with a heavy heart, taken the difficult decision to postpone our opening date."

The new Cardiff restaurant is set to be a "small, neighbourhood, friendly eatery" and is described as having "an informal relaxed dining environment, focusing on humble ingredients of the highest quality, serving seasonal small plates, hand-selected wines and cocktails". With sharing at the forefront of the restaurant's ethos, Poca's small plates will showcase meat, fish and vegetables, and will be matched with hand-selected wines and cocktails.

Some of the dishes on the Poca menu include: whole wild prawns with wild garlic butter, salame finnocchiona, lamb sweetbreads with sourdough, asparagus and brown butter jus, as well as roast cauliflower cheese croquettes and curry mayonnaise and calabrian burrata, parsley & hazelnut pesto with lemon.

Announcing its opening date, it took to its Instagram stories to write: "Doors open July 6th, 5pm. Apologies for the wait..."
